Mudhalipalayam, Nallur residents decry pollution from unsegregated wastes in abandoned quarries

Over 400 farmers and other residents of Mudhalipalayam and Nallur staged a protest in front of the Kumaran Statue in the city complaining of livelihood loss caused due to the dumping of unsegregated wastes by the Tiruppur Corporation in abandoned quarries in the villages.

Holding bottles containing the brackish contaminated water, wearing garlands of vegetables raised in contaminated soil and holding placards depicting 1.2 lakh TDS (Total Dissolved Solid) in the ground water at the quarry site, the protesters demanded declaration of the villages as polluted zones, provision of compensation accordingly, and expedite remediation measures.

The protesters lamented that the unabated dumping of unsegregated wastes in the abandoned quarries for the last 10 years has cost them their very livelihood.
