Need seen for extensive use of AI to improve quality of education

There is a need for extensive use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve academic standards, vice-chairman of Karnataka State Higher Education Council (KSHEC) S.R. Niranjana has said.

He was inaugurating an International Conference on “Responsible Artificial Intelligence” organised at Karnatak University in Dharwad on Monday.

The Department of Computer Science of Karnatak University has organised the international conference in association with Cardiff Metropolitan University, Canara Engineering College, KLE Technological University, Mangalore University, University of Wales, Presidency University and P.M. USHA.

Prof. Niranjana said that the education system has developed from gurukul system to artificial intelligence (AI) and now, there is a need for giving priority to skill-based education.

“In order to excel at the global level, students should not only have thorough knowledge of their domain but also have an understanding of other fields,” he said.

Prof. Niranjana said that post-Independence, food, communication and poverty have become a challenge and these have been addressed through the adaptation of technology and through revolutions in various sectors.

Only through social and economic development India can reach the target of Viksit Bharat, he said.

Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University P.L. Dharma said that Artificial Intelligence, which is a fruit of human intelligence, has spread its tentacles to every field. Now, it is time for the universities to build academic relationship with other universities and make efforts for further improvement in academics, he added.

Vice-Chancellor of Davangere University B.D. Kumbar warned students against the excessive use of AI as it will adversely affect the human thinking capacity.

Director of Indian Institute of Information Technology, Dharwad, Mahadev Prasanna said that AI has now taken the shape of an industry. This has resulted in its extensive use in various fields.

Presiding over the inaugural ceremony, Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University A.M. Khan emphasised the need for proper use of AI for building a health society.

Aghnesh Anupam of Cardiff Metropolitan University, Karnatak University Registrar (Evaluation) N.Y. Mattihal, Head of Computer Science Department Sridevi, Vijaykumar Gurani and others were present.
