The Navya Andhra Teachers Association (NTA) has urged the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) to protect the service benefits of teachers appointed before the introduction of the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) and rationalise the examination pattern of TET Paper-II.
NTA State president Karanam Harikrishna and general secretary Maganti Srinivasa Rao submitted a representation to the NCTE chairman in New Delhi on Friday on the issue.
The association sought legal relief for teachers appointed through District Selection Committee (DSC) recruitment in accordance with the NCTE qualifications and government rules prevailing at the time of their appointment and urged the council to consider their specific circumstances and explore legally permissible measures to safeguard their interests.
The NTA also called for an expert committee to undertake a comparative study of the DSC and TET examinations, pointing out that previous DSC examinations assessed candidates’ subject knowledge, teaching methodologies, educational psychology and other relevant areas.
The association urged the NCTE to issue clear guidelines on the continuation of service, promotions and other service benefits of senior teachers, within the framework of Supreme Court judgments. It also sought rationalisation of TET Paper-II, suggesting a separate evaluation mechanism be considered for Mathematics, Physical Science and Biological Science teachers based on their respective teaching subjects.
The association stressed that any decision should be fair and take into account teachers’ experience, qualifications demonstrated in previous recruitment examinations and teaching skills, without compromising educational standards.
NTA leaders urged the NCTE to conduct a comprehensive study of the issues affecting lakhs of teachers across the country, consult teachers’ associations and take appropriate policy decisions.
