Outgoing councillors urge the DC to restore city administration in Udupi

A delegation of outgoing councillors of the Udupi City Municipal Council on Friday urged the Deputy Commissioner, who is also the administrator of the CMC, to restore the city administration stating that it has completely collapsed.

Meeting Deputy Commissioner T.K. Swaroopa, the delegation led by outgoing CMC president Prabhakar Poojary, told the administrator that it had been a routine practice to restore roads battered by rains during the month of December. This time however, not even tenders have been called till now, the delegation said, urging the DC to immediately act on the same.

The delegation noted that the Municipal Council with its innovative approaches had made a name in the State. Its performance in tax collection, waste management, drinking water supply, streetlighting, underground drainage management and other development works had caught the attention of everyone., it said

However, after the erstwhile council’s term ended on October 28, the government appointed the DC as its administrator till a new elected body came into being. The outgoing councillors were hopeful of the DC bringing in a pro-people administration.

Paryaya nearing

Going by the present situation, however, it was unfortunate that the city administration has become insensitive to issues concerning people. Even as the Paryaya of the Sri Krishna Mutt, one of the major events of the region, was nearing, no preparation was being made to maintain roads in good condition and ensuring cleanliness in the city, they said.

People have been complaining that CMC officials were not available in the office when they visit the council for their work. It was their complaint that officials do not attend the office on time. Also, they do not respond to people’s grievances, the delegation said.

The delegation urged the Deputy Commissioner to visit the CMC on a regular basis to monitor the administration. It also urged her to hold meetings of officials along with the MLA at least twice a month to streamline the administration.
