Over 1,500 large idols of Lord Ganesha, which were installed in public places for worshipping as part of the Vinayaka Chaturthi celebrations, were immersed in select waterbodies across Coimbatore district on Wednesday.
In Coimbatore City Police limits, processions carried around 570 Vinayaka idols to Kurichi tank, Kuniyamuthur tank, Singanallur Kulatheri, Vellakinar tank and other small waterbodies with police protection and immersed them ceremoniously, the police said. Around 730 large idols had been installed in city limits. Immersion of the remaining idols will take place on Friday.
Around 1,000 Vinayaka idols were immersed in various waterbodies in in the jurisdiction of the Coimbatore District (Rural) Police on Wednesday. A total of 1,614 idols had been installed in rural areas and immersion of the remaining idols will take place in the coming days.
The police said that no untoward incidents or law and order issues were reported during the procession and immersion of idols on Wednesday.Â
