Over 2 lakh voters in Ernakulam ‘unmapped’ as SIR enumeration ends

With the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls entering its final phase, over 2 lakh voters in Ernakulam district have been left ‘unmapped’ as they have not been linked to the voters’ list from 2002, the base document for the ongoing exercise.

As of Thursday (December 18), the last date to complete the enumeration process as part of SIR in the State, 2,15,957 voters in the district were categorised as ‘unmapped’. Though they have submitted their enumeration forms back, their details could not be successfully linked to the electoral data from 2002, official sources said.

The officials arrived at the number as the booth-level officers (BLOs) completed the digitisation of enumeration forms in the district on Wednesday (December 17), a day before the deadline to complete enumeration works.

A draft electoral roll on the basis of SIR enumeration is scheduled to be published on December 23.

Officials involved in SIR in the district said they aim to reduce to the maximum extent the number of voters who will have to be called for a hearing after publishing the draft rolls. Those called for a hearing will have to produce either of the identity proofs as instructed by the Election Commission of India (ECI) to be enrolled in the fresh electoral rolls.

“Among the forms digitised, there are voters who could not trace details of their own or their relatives from the 2002 list. They or their relatives would have been excluded from the 2002 list for one reason or another, mostly since they failed to fill in the required details during the SIR held then. Such voters have been categorised as unmapped,” an election official said. The officials have repeatedly allayed fears over eligible voters getting excluded from the list following SIR.

In a bid to fix the gap, Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) on Thursday convened a meeting of the representatives of political parties at the Assembly constituency level. “If one can find the required details from 2002, in which political parties may help, we can still add those details in the enumeration forms, which have already been digitised,” an official source said.

New electors are, meanwhile, being encouraged to fill up the Form 6 along with a declaration and submit it to the booth-level officers or fill the form and declaration online using the ECINet App/website https://voters.eci.gov.in/ to get their names included in the final electoral rolls to be published in February 2026.
