A total of 867 motorists were booked for driving under the influence of alcohol during special enforcement drives in Hyderabad and Cyberabad over the past weekend.
In Cyberabad, the traffic police booked 407 offenders. A majority of offenders, 158, were in the age group of 21-30 years while 147 fell in the 31-40 years bracket. Interestingly, six offenders aged above 61 years.
During the previous week from December 8 to December 13, 385 drunk driving cases were disposed of in courts, with 16 offenders receiving a combination of fine and jail term, 21 being awarded fine along with social service, and 348 being fined.
Meanwhile, the traffic cops in Hyderabad conducted a two-day special drive on December 12 and 13, during which 460 drivers were caught driving under the influence of alcohol. The officials warned that if an intoxicated driver causes a fatal accident, the individual will be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and carries a maximum punishment of up to 10 years of imprisonment along with a fine.
