A 45-year-old Panchayat president of Peruvalam village that comes under Nemili panchayat union was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly not returning balance cash after land was sold.
The arrested person was identified as R. Kumaresan, a local DMK functionary. Initial inquiry revealed that the victim B. Munusamy, was a farmer in the neighbouring Seruvalayam village. He owned 40 cents of land (around 17,500 sq.ft) in the village.
The police said that Munusamy decided to sell 40 cents of land for the existing market price. Kumaresan got into an agreement with Munusamy to sell the property to prospective buyers.
Later, the land was sold for ₹25 lakh. However, Munusamy told the police that Kumaresan had only given him around ₹5 lakh. Kumaresan also allegedly threatened Munusamy. A case was registered by Nemili police and upon investigation, Kumaresan was arrested and lodged at Central Prison in Vellore. A probe is under way.
