Tamil Nadu Government All Department Pensioners’ Association staged a dharna in Thoothukudi on Tuesday, pressing for a 12-point charter of demands.
The protest was held near the Chidambaranagar bus stop and was led by P. Thiraviyam, district president of Tamil Nadu Government All Department Pensioner’s Association.
Pensioners raised slogans seeking the repeal of the Pension Rules (Validation) Act 2025, which they said adversely affected them. They demanded that 50% dearness allowance be merged with basic pension and restoration of the commuted portion of pension in full after 10 years and 8 months. They also called for the scrapping of the new pension scheme and restoration of the old pension scheme.
Among their other demands were 20% interim relief, restoration of the concession in train fares for senior citizens, ensuring pension parity and enhancement of family pension and the establishment of a statutory national commission for senior citizens.
The protestors also demanded that other long-pending issues concerning the pensioners be addressed.
Around 120 pensioners participated in the dharna and raised slogans in support of their demands.
