In a case of extortion, two persons, including a weekly magazine reporter in Dindigul district, were arrested and remanded in judicial custody on Monday.
Following a complaint from Ezhilarasi, wife of Rathnam, Superintendent of Police S. Jeyakumar directed the police to register a case.
DSP Karthik, Inspector Meenakshi and SI Kader Mydeen and their team conducted investigations.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that Ezhilarasi had been running a de-addiction centre in RM Colony Fourth Cross Street. On October 4, two persons identified as Pushpa Giridharan, 36, son of Arul Raj, a journalist, and Manoj, 27, son of Gnana Stalin of West Arockiya Madha Street, visited her centre.
It is said that the duo had reportedly threatened her to part with ₹5 lakh in cash for not publishing a story about the de-addiction centre in the magazine. They had claimed that they possessed some photographs of torture of some inmates and stated that they would draw the attention of the Government to seal the centre. Hence, to refrain from writing or publishing, they had sought money, the complaint said.
Finding the CCTV footage and based on the confession, the police registered a case and produced them before the court, which remanded them in judicial custody.
