The police blocked a march to the Assembly by contract teachers who are on an indefinite stir to press for job regularisation on Tuesday.
The protesters held a demonstration and demanded that the government come good on assurance of regularising the services of long-serving teachers.
Leader of Opposition and DMK convenor R. Siva and other DMK leaders joined the protesting teachers to express their solidarity.
He noted that several contract teachers had put in long periods of service ranging from four to eight years and their jobs ought to have been made permanent in 2025 itself. The Education Minister was also on record that a solution would be found in January, he added.
