The cyber police officials in Kozhikode city have urged citizens to remain vigilant following reports of a new cyber fraud targeting consumers booking gas cylinders. Cyber criminals, according to officials, are suspected of exploiting the current shortage of cylinders to dupe unsuspecting customers, especially those who use smartphones for booking across the State.
A senior official with the cyber cell says that the scam begins with a text message sent to the victim’s phone. The scamsters then reach out via WhatsApp and share a file named ‘Gas Bill Update APK’. Victims are instructed to install the app to update their gas booking details or clear pending dues, thereby trapping them, he adds.
“Installing the APK gives the scammers complete control of the smartphone. They will be able to access bank account information, UPI PIN, and other sensitive data,” the official warns. According to him, similar malicious files disguised as services have been circulating in cyberspace, tricking many unsuspecting users.
In the wake of the latest scam, cyber police stations across the State have stepped up surveillance measures and online awareness campaigns. According to cyber cell officers, customers should not respond to any online or SMS prompts to book gas cylinders using external links or apps. They say the process can be completed safely through the approved helplines or websites of gas suppliers.
A helpline, 1930, has been made available for the public to report suspected fraud involving apps or files circulated in the name of gas cylinder supply. With the shortage of commercial cylinders yet to be addressed, hoteliers and owners of food-based ventures have been asked to stay more alert against the scam. Suspected cases can also be reported to the National Cyber Crime Portal at www.cybercrime.gov.in.
