The police arrested three men and seized 52.821 kg of banned gutkha products during a raid in Ponneri on Monday.
Acting on a tip-off, a team from Ponneri police station searched a petty shop on Pillaiyar Koil Street, Balaji Nagar, and seized 7.308 kg of gutkha allegedly stocked for sale. The shop owner, Vedhamuthu, 45, was arrested.
Based on information obtained during interrogation, the police arrested Saravanan, 43, of Vellodai, Krishnapuram, and Satheesh, 43, of Vellodai Ponneri.
Police said the duo procured gutkha from Andhra Pradesh and transported it in Saravanan’s car for distribution in and around Ponneri. A search of the car led to the seizure of another 45.513 kg of gutkha. The car was also seized.
A case was registered against the three men and they were produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody.
