Pollachi Lok Sabha MP K. Eswarasamy has urged the Railway Ministry to restore and reopen the Chettipalayam and Kovilpalayam railway stations along the Pollachi-Coimbatore route.
While he welcomed reports of the Railways Ministry sanctioning the construction of new railway stations at Karivalamvandanallur and Chozhapuram along the Madurai-Sengottai route, the Pollachi MP said the Chettipalayam and Kovilpalayam stations, which had served the public for decades since the British era, were closed during the gauge conversion works.
Both the stations were important access points for thousands of people, including students, farmers, senior citizens and those travelling for medical and commercial purposes.
While Chettipalayam railway station comes under the Salem Division, Kovilpalayam railway station is in the jurisdiction of the Palakkad Division.
It was disappointing to note that while new railway stations were being sanctioned and developed in other parts of the country, those that had already existed and served the public for many decades continued to remain closed, he said.
The restoration of the two stations would ensure convenient and affordable travel for the public. Urging the Railways Ministry to treat the matter with utmost importance, Mr. Eswarasamy noted that the prolonged delay in restoring the two stations caused much consternation among the people.
