Portion of Perambur Barracks Road caves in, damages sewer line

A portion of Perambur Barracks Road caved in on Tuesday, damaging a 1,200 mm diameter sewage pipeline. Traffic was affected following the sudden cave-in and the affected stretch was cordoned off. Traffic police diverted vehicles through alternative routes.

According to Chennai Metrowater, the road cave-in occurred near the Purasawalkam sewage pumping station around 3.30 p.m. on Tuesday. Officials who inspected the site found that a soil collapse had affected the old sewer pipeline beneath the road.

Measures were initiated to ensure sewage flow was not disrupted and to safeguard residents. Work has commenced to repair the damaged pipeline.

Residents noted that road cave-ins had occurred on the road on three occasions over the past five years, causing traffic disruption. Such issues were also reported in areas such as Pallavan Salai. Residents urged authorities to investigate the cause of frequent road collapse, including impact of ongoing Metro Rail works.

Officials said the damaged portion of the pipeline is being removed and would be replaced depending on the extent of the damage. The road surface would be restored. The work is being monitored.
