The Dakshina Kannada Zilla Pourkarmikara Hagu Nalkane Darje Noukarara Sangha has urged the government to allot housing sites to 260 pourakarmikas working in the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) on the 21.5 acre land earmarked at different locations in Mangaluru taluk.

Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, sangha secretary S.P. Anand said among the 21.5 acres land earmarked include nine acres in Kudupu village in Mangaluru taluk. Of the nine acres, sites on four acres were allotted to 150 pourakarmikas in 1996-97 and only 25 pourakarmikas built houses there on about 50 cents of land. The remaining five acres was vacant.

Mr. Anand said the Koraga community was making efforts to get the five acre vacant land earlier allocated to pourakarmikas. The sangha will launch an agitation if the government decides to allot the land to Koragas, he said.
