Action would be taken against those whose negligence led to the death of a Class VII student when a portion of the compound wall collapsed on him at a Government High School in Kondapuram in Tiruvallur district on Tuesday, School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said.
Speaking to the media here on Wednesday, Mr. Poyyamozhi said officials had provided him with firsthand information about the incident and a departmental inquiry had been ordered. The police had also registered a case and were investigating.
He said the collapsed compound wall had been constructed during 2014–15 using funds from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development. Construction materials had earlier been dumped in the area to prevent people from using the space. However, after they were removed, students began accessing the area, which led to the unfortunate incident.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had announced a solatium of ₹3 lakh to the bereaved family, and the government would also extend assistance for the educational needs of the victim’s sibling, he added.
