The Communist Party of India (Marxist) will organise a State-level protest called Janadhani Rally in Bengaluru on December 21, demanding redressal of issues concerning farmers, workers and common people and an end to the anti-people policies of the State and Central governments.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, CPI(M) district secretary K. Neela said that the rally will see the participation of over 30,000 farmers, agricultural workers, landless peasants, unorganised sector workers, youth and victims of land acquisition from across the State.
About 2,500 people from Kalaburagi district are expected to take part.
Ms. Neela said that the party has been conducting an intensive State-wide campaign since November 1, with activists visiting thousands of households daily to distribute pamphlets and explain how the anti-people policies of the BJP-led Union government and the Congress-led State government have adversely impacted livelihoods, employment, agriculture, education and healthcare.
She said that the campaign also highlights the people-centric policies implemented by CPI(M)-led governments in Kerala and earlier in West Bengal and Tripura and stresses the need to strengthen alternative Left politics in Karnataka.
Signature campaigns being carried out have received a positive response from the public, she added.
Ms. Neela said that CPI(M) activists in Kalaburagi district alone have visited over 25,000 households, documenting widespread distress, including unemployment, poor implementation of MGNREGA, agrarian crisis, drinking water shortages, basic amenities, mounting debt, corruption, rising inequality and growing communal tensions.
The charter of demands includes a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price with 50% profit over cost for all crops, withdrawal of land acquisition and labour laws, protection of farmers land, regularisation of contract workers, social security for unorganised labour, filling of vacant government posts, strengthening public education and healthcare, stopping privatisation of essential services, protection of Dalit and minority rights, curbing corruption and safeguarding federalism and democratic rights.
Senior CPI(M) Polit Bureau member U. Vasuki and other State leaders will address a public meeting on December 21 as part of the agitation.
