Protecting Tamirabarani everyone’s responsibility, says Collector

Collector Anand Mohan on Sunday flagged off a ‘World Rivers Day’ awareness rally in Papanasam, in which a large number of school students participated.

Speaking at the event, he said the Tamirabarani was the lifeline of the people of the region and protecting the river was everyone’s responsibility. It was the main source of water for Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts. The river was being polluted due to discarded clothes and discharge of different types of waste. Hence, the district administration, NGOs, students and public were jointly undertaking various activities to protect the river. “However, the key solution is changing the mindset of everyone,” he added.

The Collector said an award would be given at the end of the year to the college that best maintained the stretch of the river allocated to it.
