The AINRC, led by Chief Minister N. Rangaswamy, came to power again, winning 18 seats in the 30-seat Assembly with the help of allies BJP, LJKL and the AIADMK. Debuting party TVK won two seats, its ally NMK won one seat and independent candidates won three more.
AINRC’s dominance in Puducherry, which began in 2011, continued, along with the Congress’s diminished significance. The former won 12 seats, while the latter won one. AIADMK, which won zero seats in the last election, won one in this one.
Key candidates in Puducherry delivered a mixed bag of results. Four-time Chief Minister N. Rangaswamy won in both Thattanchavady and Mangalam constituencies. DMK’s A.M.H. Nazeem, a former minister and party leader, also won in Karaikal South constituency, as well as BJP leaders A. Johnkumar (Mudaliarpet) and A. Namassivayam (Mannadipet). However, some key candidates also lost in their constituencies.
