Puducherry government reiterates demand for a Madras High Court bench in UT

The Puducherry government has reiterated its demand for setting up a bench of the Madras High Court in the Union Territory (UT).

In a memorandum submitted to Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Puducherry Home Minister A. Namassivayam said there was a need to establish a separate bench of the High Court in the UT. The memorandum urged the Centre to consider the proposal at the earliest, a release here said.

Mr. Namassivayam, who also handles the Law portfolio, personally handed over the memorandum to the Union Minister when he met him in New Delhi on Tuesday (September 16, 2026). The Puducherry bench would ensure cost-effective and speedy justice for litigants in the UT, he said, adding that the proposal would also help strengthen the legal system.

The meeting with the Union Law Minister was a follow-up measure to the assurance the Home Minister had given in the Assembly recently, during his reply to the Demands for Grants, of taking up with the Centre the demand to constitute the bench. The Union Minister’s response was “very positive” and he has agreed to take up the demand at the appropriate level at the earliest, Mr. Namassivayam’s office said.

The demand for establishing a separate bench of the High Court in Puducherry has been pending for a long time.
