About 50% of the redevelopment work at the Ukkadam bus stand in Coimbatore city has been completed.
The ₹21.55-crore project, which commenced on August 24, 2025, involves the construction of two terminals. Terminal I is being developed near the down ramp at Ukkadam on Selvapuram Road and will have 28 bus bays. Officials said that construction of the commercial complex at this terminal has been completed, road paving works have been finished and truss works are in progress.
Terminal II is being developed at the existing bus stand site. Footing and concrete works have been completed, and construction of the commercial complex is under way. This terminal will have 30 bus bays.
Together, the two terminals will provide 58 bus bays and will be capable of handling up to 80 buses at a time. The facility will have four access points, seating capacity for 60 passengers, three toilets, two mother-care rooms, commercial spaces, food courts, free Wi-Fi, charging points and facilities for persons with disabilities. Security arrangements will include 30 surveillance cameras and a monitoring centre with emergency response facilities.
The project officials said that Terminal I would be completed first, likely by the end of January. Work on Terminal II would commence after identifying an alternative site for temporary bus operations, or bus services may be shifted to Terminal I after its completion to facilitate flooring and other works at Terminal II. The option found feasible would be implemented.
Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran said the truss structures are being fabricated at the factory and will be transported to the site for installation. He added that a fixed deadline has been set, with the project scheduled for completion by mid-February this year.
