The Alliance of Resident Welfare Associations (AORWA) has issued an open letter addressed to the people of Tamil Nadu, calling for ethical voting and opposing the practice of accepting money or gifts during elections. This campaign is to raise awareness across sections of society about corruption linked to electoral practices.
The letter, released as part of the ‘My Vote is Not for Sale’ campaign, stated that votes should not be treated as a transaction, and that it must be for development.
According to the letter, the association’s volunteers would focus on educating the public and encouraging voters to commit to ethical voting.
The letter urged citizens to publicly pledge that their vote is not a commodity, remain vigilant, and report instances of cash or freebies distribution to authorities, and spread awareness through social media, local gatherings, and businesses. It also highlighted the role of young voters, noting that nearly 23 per cent of the electorate comprises voters aged between 18 and 29.
AORWA said the campaign would involve individuals, residents’ welfare associations, civic and social organisations, non-governmental organisations, self-help groups, educational institutions, and corporate entities.
