Residents of Annai Ganga Nair Township at Peedampalli near Coimbatore staged a protest on Sunday (August 16, 2026) demanding closure or relocation of a Tasmac outlet in their locality.
Around 100 residents, including children and the elderly, took part in the protest. They formed a human chain and staged a sit-in, demanding intervention of the authorities.
They said there were over 250 houses in the locality and more residences are coming up in over 1,000 sites.
The protesters said that a section of people visiting the Tasmac outlet in the residential area were causing various inconveniences. Littering of waste and empty bottles, eve-teasing, thefts and petty fights were occuring.
They also alleged that illegal sale of liquor was happening around the outlet on dry days and non-business hours.
“After being alerted by residents about black market sale of liquor, the police seized 21 bottles on Saturday (August 15, 2026) when the outlet was closed due to Independence Day. The sale resumed after two hours,” alleged R. Gayathri from Annai Ganga Nair Township Residents Welfare Association.
According to the protesters, they have sent multiple petitions to the Chief Minister and other officials demanding closure of the outlet.
Another resident, Sekar Karunakaran K., alleged that the government was only concerned about sale of liquor and not about nuisance created by a section of alcohol consumers.
A woman resident said it was difficult for women and children to walk through the locality due to persons roaming under the influence of alcohol.
The Sulur police held talks with the protesters and stated that the police could take action only on illegal sale of liquor.
Ms. Gayathri added that Sulur MLA N.M. Sukumar spoke to representatives of the residents and assured a solution within 40 days.
