Residents submit petitions detailing problems they face with sewage pools, stagnant rainwater

Residents battling the stagnant rainwater, badly damaged roads and the overflowing sewage systems submitted petition to Deputy Mayor K.R. Raju on Tuesday during the weekly grievances redress meeting.

Members of Rahmath Nagar East Residents’ Welfare Association, led by their president S. Paul Peter Manickam, said the Eighty Feet Road traversing their area remains submerged for several days after recent rains and due to absence of stormwater drain. Since this road was already in a bad shape, rainwater stagnation had made the situation worse and was flowing into the low-lying houses.

Hence, the Corporation should construct stormwater drains and culverts to drain water properly and save the roads, they said.

Resident S.R. Siraj of High Ground submitted a petition detailing the problems the residents are now encountering due to the sewage overflowing from the underground drainage system and the stagnant sewage in the 15^th street of ward 55.

“The residents cannot walk along the road due to this sewage pool and the children going to the school are struggling a lot,” he said.

Resident Samuel of Ayeesha Avenue in Thiyagaraja Nagar Extension submitted a petition explaining the health hazards being caused by the stagnant sewage in his area. “Since a section of the residents are discharging the liquid waste on the road, the sewage flowing along the street is stagnating now. Hence, the Corporation authorities should take due action against the violators,” he said.

Even as the residents are appealing to the Corporation to complete the underground drainage work at the earliest, residents of Indra Nagar, Sonia Nagar, Karunya Nagar, Messiah Nagar, Sonia Colony and Thendral Nagar submitted a petition to the Deputy Mayor against the underground sewage system. They said the sewage overflowing from the clogged underground drainage system could create ‘sewage pool’ in the dead-ends of these residential areas, which was now clean and tidy.

The sewage overflowing from the manhole close to the dead-end at Hariraj Street near Royal Hospital had created nauseating condition. Hence, the Corporation should give-up its plan to create underground drainage in their area, they said.
