A Resource Recovery Centre (RRC) was formally dedicated today at Hubbathalai near Coonoor in the Nilgiris, marking a significant step towards strengthening rural solid waste management in the district.
In a press release, it was stated that the facility has been established to “enable the safe and systematic management of solid waste generated across six village panchayats, covering 85 hamlets, and is intended to serve as a decentralised model for environmentally responsible waste handling in rural and eco-sensitive landscapes.”
The inauguration was attended by Nilgiris District Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru, Chief General Manager of the Cordite Factory in Aravankadu Vikas Purwar, and Additional Collector and Project Director of the Special Area Development Programme Abhilasha Kour.
“In her presidential address, the District Collector emphasised the importance of robust and reliable waste-management services in rural areas, particularly within ecologically sensitive regions. She acknowledged the support extended by the Cordite Factory under its Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, and appreciated the sustained efforts of ‘Clean Coonoor’ in bringing structured waste-management systems to rural areas, drawing upon experience gained through its public–private partnership with the Coonoor Municipality,” the press release from Clean Coonoor stated.
Mr. Purwar promised continued institutional support for similar initiatives in the future. The programme was attended by school students, sanitation workers, representatives of neighbouring local bodies, and members of the general public, reflecting broad community participation, the press release added.
