Members of Tamil Nadu Deaf Rights Welfare Association on Monday staged demonstrations here, pressing for various demands, including 1% reservation in government jobs for persons with hearing impairment.
They also submitted a petition at the weekly grievance meeting held at the Collectorate on Monday. The meeting was chaired by Collector Vishu Mahajan.
The association, led by its district secretary R. Thangaraj, demanded 1% reservation for persons with hearing impairments in government employment, monthly assistance of ₹6,000 for persons with hearing impairments and appointment of sign language interpreters at all government offices, hospitals, courts and police stations.
It also sought free house site pattas for persons with hearing impairment and appointment of teachers trained in sign language interpreters at special schools for students with hearing impairment.
In a separate petition, members of Muslim Munnetra Sabha and residents of Puraiyur near Eral submitted a petition stating that a dargah had existed in the village for the past 300 years. They said they had learnt that the Revenue Department was taking steps to issue free house-site pattas for the site and urged the authorities to protect the 300-year-old-dargah and also take steps to provide free house site pattas to 100 native Muslim families who did not own house sites.
