Roadside parking remains a challenge at Coimbatore Flower Market following eviction drive

Traffic police in Coimbatore city are facing challenges in controlling roadside parking at the Flower Market on Mettupalayam Road following the removal of street vendors and other encroachments. The market area, previously congested with vendors occupying pavements and parts of the road, was recently cleared as part of a drive to improve traffic flow and pedestrian movement.

Despite the clearance, people continue to park their vehicles along the roads, causing congestion. Traffic police said that while the area appears clearer, enforcing discipline among vehicle owners remains difficult. Patrol vehicles are deployed continuously to prevent motorists from parking on Mettupalayam Road and to direct them to interior roads. Officials said vehicles blocking traffic for prolonged periods are fined ₹500, though most are warned and advised to use nearby parking lots or side streets.

A. Ansari, secretary of the Coimbatore District All Flower Traders Welfare Association, said that motorists often avoid designated parking because it is paid and they prefer not to spend for a short visit. Concerns over the safety of two-wheelers have also discouraged the use of parking lots. Traders have urged authorities to install cameras and improve security.

Police said traffic flow has improved slightly with the wider road now available after the eviction drive, but continued monitoring and enforcement in Coimbatore city are necessary to maintain smooth movement.
