Traders in Devakottai engaged in a road blockade here on Wednesday to protest the removal of roadside shops.
Bus stand expansion work is underway at the Devakottai Municipality in Sivaganga district at a cost of ₹12.81 crore, currently, a temporary bus stand is operating at Ramnagar.
However, roadside traders have continued to set up shops and conduct business adjacent to the old bus stand.
As this has been causing traffic congestion in the area, officials from the Municipality and the Highways Department gave the traders a specific timeframe to shift their shops to a different location.
Nevertheless, the roadside shops were not removed and continued to operate as before.
On Wednesday, when officials took action to remove these roadside shops, the traders launched a road blockade, stating that their livelihoods would be affected.
However, as Karaikudi MLA S. Mangudi contacted the officials and requested that traders be given more time to relocate their roadside shops, the officials left without removing the shops.
