In a major push to promote science and introduce government school students to advanced technologies, a robotics laboratory was inaugurated at the Government Higher Secondary School at Thuvakudi in Tiruchi.

Minister for Municipal Administration K.N. Nehru and Minister for School Education Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi on Friday inaugurated the facility, which has been established under a State government initiative to enhance problem-solving, critical thinking, teamwork, and creativity among students of Classes VI to IX in government schools.

As part of the initiative, 15 robotics laboratories have been set up across 15 districts in Tamil Nadu at a cost of ₹6.09 crore, with Tiruchi being one of the selected districts. Each selected school will function as a hub, extending training facilities and access to nearby government schools.

Students will be introduced to advanced technologies, including multi-functional robotics systems, STEM workstations supported by prototyping virtual laboratories, colour sorter programmable robots, smart dustbin robots, hungry robots, life-size voice-controlled robots, drone technology, and basic electronics.

The curriculum, developed by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) with academic support from Anna University, places a strong emphasis on hands-on learning, with nearly 90% of the programme devoted to practical training. The lab features 11 types of robotics equipment and includes 10 practical experiments.

The programme focuses on developing core competencies such as simple circuits, breadboards, and sensor technologies, including ultrasonic and gas sensors, thereby strengthening students’ foundational knowledge in electronics and programming. Creativity and design thinking are encouraged through project-based learning with models such as Solar House, Frog Bot DIY, Smart Dustbin and Carnival Ride, and projects including Obstacle-Avoiding Robots and Line Follower Robots.

At the end of the academic year, practical and written assessments will be conducted by Anna University, following which certificates will be issued.

In view of the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and robotics, the initiative is designed to prepare students for future careers in engineering, science and technology.

During the event, the Ministers inaugurated a new school building constructed on the premises at a cost of ₹1.32 crore under the State Finance Commission Grant.
