Sanitary workers staged a protest by besieging Sivaganga Municipal Office on Tuesday (October 6, 2026), demanding regularisation of those working under the outsourcing system.

There are 60 permanent sanitary workers and 74 outsourced sanitary workers in the municipality. Pressing for the regularisation of outsourced workers, members of the Municipal, Rural Development and Local Body Workers Union, affiliated to the CITU, have been on an indefinite strike since Monday.

On Tuesday, they staged a protest by besieging the municipal office. speaking to reporters, State vice-president of the union Veeraiya said, “Outsourced sanitary workers in Sivaganga Municipalilty must be paid the daily wage of ₹622 fixed by the District Collector. However, the private company outsourcing workers is paying them only ₹350.”

Mr. Veeraiya alleged that they were often forced to take leave. However, the private company pockets the leave salary. “If garbage collection vehicles are damaged the workers are coerced into repairing them at their own expense. Such issues must be resolved,” he added.

Further, he demanded that the outsourced workers be regularised.

“Government Orders for privatisation of permanent posts must be revoked. Compassionate appointments should be provided to the heirs of workers who died while on duty. Weekly holidays, national festival holidays, and employee identity cards must be provided to the workers,” he emphasised.
