Mathematics serves as the unifying foundation for all disciplines in science and technology and plays a vital role in building solutions and services towards Viksit Bharat by 2047, said N. Kailaiselvi, Secretary, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India, and Director-General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), in Kumbakonam.
Speaking at the presentation of the SASTRA–Ramanujan Award 2025, Dr. Kailaiselvi underlined the growing relevance of mathematics in the era of quantum computing and urged researchers to explore its potential across cutting-edge, multidisciplinary areas of science, and technology.
The award was presented to Alexander Smith of Northwestern University, U.S., for his significant contribution to congruent number problems inspired by the works of Srinivasa Ramanujan.
Of the 20 recipients of the SASTRA–Ramanujan Award so far, seven have gone on to receive the Fields Medal, including Dr. Manjul Bhargava, who was the first receipient of the award in 2005.
Alladi Krishnaswami, Professor of Mathematics, University of Florida, and Jury Chair and S. Vaidhyausbramaniam, Vice-Chancellor of SASTRA, were present.
