The reintroduction and approval of the Private Universities (Amendment) Bill in Legislative Assembly earlier in September by the State Government is highly condemnable “as it is against social justice,” the Tamil Nadu Retired College Teachers’ Association (TNRECTA) has said.
Addressing the state general body meeting in Tiruchi on Monday, TNRECTA general secretary N. Periathambi said that the Bill was introduced in the Assembly in September 2025, but had been withdrawn by the then government on October 27, 2025 due to strong opposition.
“However, reintroducing this Bill and securing its approval is unlawful and highly condemnable. TNRECTA urges the State government to immediately withdraw the Act,” he said.
Through other resolutions passed during the meeting, the body urged the government to take immediate action to limit data collection for the New Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to those who have recently registered and joined the programme. “New e-cards can be issued to everyone based on the data available for those under the 2026 medical insurance scheme. However, instead of doing so, it is not right for individual treasuries to repeatedly demand data. It is shocking that the Commissioner of Treasuries has failed to build a consensus in this regard.”
TNRECTA urged the authorities to abolish the Tamil Nadu Assured Pension Scheme (TAPS) introduced by the DMK government last year and implement the Old Pension Scheme.
Commenting on the announcement regarding the creation of seven new nursing colleges for the B.Sc Nursing degree course, TNRECTA said that the Government Order issued by the Secretary of Health and Family Welfare Department to the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University stipulates that teaching and non-teaching staff must be recruited on a temporary and contractual basis, and that permission to start the new colleges would be granted only after ensuring that the government was absolved of pensionary and any other continuing liabilities. The association condemned what it termed as an attempt by the State government to shirk its moral responsibilities and social obligations and called for the withdrawal of the G.O.
TNRECTA president P. Madhu and vice-president S. Kanthimathi spoke.
