A seven-year-old boy was killed in Puducherry after a poorly maintained electric pole fell on him while he was playing on the Beach Promenade area on Sunday (September 27, 2026) evening.
The deceased child, Fazal, a native of Fatehpur village in Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh, was living in Puducherry after his parents shifted to the coastal hamlet of Vembakeerapalayam near Puducherry town a few years ago, for selling toys and other products for tourists.
As the child was playing on the beach while his mother was selling products to weekend tourists on the Beach Promenade, the pole came crashing down on the boy. He was immediately rushed to the nearby Government General Hospital but doctors there could not save the child, police said.

In a police complaint, the child’s father has alleged that the electric pole fell on his son’s neck and chest. As the pole fell on him, the child fell unconscious and was immediately rushed to the hospital. The complainant has alleged that “the pole was rusted and was poorly maintained.” The victim’s father has cited in the complaint that official negligence has led to the death of his child, the police said..
The Odhiansalai police have registered a case under section 106 (1) of BNS.

In the recent times, there had been media reports highlighting the poor condition of electric poles constructed on the Beach Promenade area. The reports had shown the dilapidated state of the poles constructed on the beach area and other parts of the town.

The Pondicherry State Students and Parents Welfare Association, in a representation to the Lt. Governor on Monday, requested him to order an audit of all electric poles erected in Puducherry. “Despite spending crores of money under Smart City project, the condition of electric poles has not changed,” the representation said.
