Nagercoil Corporation will restore the Chemmankulam lake at an estimated cost of ₹6.59 crore.
In line with this, preparations are under way for Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to lay the foundation stone for the project during his visit to Kanniyakumari district on February 24 and 25.
Chemmankulam lake, located on Avvai-Shanmugam Salai at Ozhuginesary area, has suffered severe environmental damage due to sewage intrusion and proliferation of water hyacinth. The lake, which once showed visible stretches of water, had become almost entirely covered with water hyacinth and other weeds, leaving only small patches of water resembling an oasis in the desert.
Residents and environmentalists consistently pressed to suspend the sewage intrusion and restore the waterbody.
In 2024, an assessment was carried out and a Detailed Project Report (DPR) was submitted for the approval of renovation of the lakefront and restoration of the waterbody.
Following the approval of the project, a work order was issued, a few days ago, for the renovation and restoration of Chemmankulam.
An official from the Nagercoil Corporation said that the project will begin with desilting of the waterbody and strengthening of the bund. In addition, the lakefront renovation will also include footpath on bund, kids play area, seating, floating wetland, birds island, parking facilities, lighting and other amenities.
He noted that although the project has a time frame of one year for its completion, the Corporation has been planning to complete the project within six months, which is before the onset of northeast monsoon.
Nagercoil Corporation Commissioner Nishant Krishna said that the lake will be completely restored and transformed into a recreational space in the heart of the city. He added that Underground Drainage System works in the area have been completed, sewage intrusion into the lake has been arrested and any missing connection that will be connected to the existing UGDS network.
