Villagers laid siege to the Singampunari Union Office here on Tuesday to protest the failure of authorities to fully renovate a damaged road.

Over 200 families live at Bharathi Nagar, located within the Annaikkaraipatti Panchayat near Singampunari in Sivaganga district. The road connecting Bharathi Nagar with the Kirungakottai main road was laid several years ago. At that time, the residents had complained that the work was of poor quality.

The condition of the road eventually deteriorated completely and it developed several potholes and craters. This caused hardship to schoolchildren, alleged the protesters. Despite numerous petitions to the authorities concerned to repair the road, action was not taken.

In this situation, instead of relaying the road entirely, officials recently took steps to do patch work. Angered by this, the villagers laid siege to the Singampunari Union Office and engaged in a heated argument with the officials. The protest was eventually called off after officials held talks and offered a compromise.
