Six students of Madras Medical College (MMC) have been suspended for allegedly ragging a junior student in the hostel. The students were also expelled from the men’s hostel. However, college authorities maintained that this was not an incident of ragging.
A student belonging to MBBS batch 2022 lodged a complaint regarding “physical and mental abuse”. A preliminary inquiry was conducted by K. Shantaraman, dean, J. Sreevidya, vice-principal and Senthilkumar, hostel warden (men) of MMC on December 15. They found that the six students had called for a meeting of kabaddi players of 2022, 2023 and 2024 batches in a particular room from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. on December 14-15. This was without the authorisation of the sports committee or warden.
The six students told the authorities that about 20 junior batch students were asked to come for the meeting regarding a kabaddi match. An argument broke between students of 2021 and 2022 batches. The complainant was called to the room at around 1.30 a.m. and was asked to kneel down for a short period. The inquiry committee said he had left the room after sometime and there seems to be “no evidence of physical assault”.
Based on preliminary inquiry, the six students were suspended from the college until further orders. An inquiry committee was constituted to conduct a detailed inquiry with all students involved on the day of incident and submit a detailed report within seven days.
Sources said the boy was made to kneel down for long hours. It is reliably learned that the boy had left the campus following the incident and was later traced.
Dr. Shantaraman said this was not an incident of ragging. “Final year students had a kabaddi match. There was some issue of the line being touched during the match, and this led to a fight on a Whatsapp group on returning to the hostel after the match,” he said.
He added that the six students were suspended to maintain the “institution’s discipline”. Officials said that the affected student has lodged a complaint with the National Medical Commission.
Police said that a complaint is yet to be filed, and the committee constituted would conduct a detailed inquiry.
