Smart meters only for new connections, MESCOM

Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (Mescom) has said the smart electric meters are mandatory only for new electricity connections, other than irrigation pumpsets, as stipulated by Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission.

A statement here said some people have expressed apprehension that installation of smart meters would require larger space. The company said there was no need for a large space to install such meters.

Further, consumers who want to avail themselves of power supply on and from January 1, 2026, are required to mandatorily install smart meters. Smart meters are not compulsory for the existing consumers, Mescom said.
