Development of Someshwara beach at Byndoor, at the far-end of Udupi district, at an estimated cost of ₹11.32 crore by Karnataka Tourism Infrastructure Limited (KTIL), is nearing completion.

Located under the Ottinene Hillock at Paduvari, the beach got its name from the adjacent Someshwara Temple. The Sumanavathi river, also called Byndoor river, joins the Arabian Sea at this location, forming a delta. The shallow waters of the sea attract thousands of tourists every day.

KTIL initiated development of the beach in 2023 to enhance facilities for local residents as well as tourists, as the beach falls in the coastal tourism circuit of Udupi-Kollur-Murdeshwar-Gokarna. With very less government land being available to provide the facilities, the Tourism Department acquired about 2.7 acres of land close to the beach, and also bought some land when acquisition did not go through.

The initial task was strengthening the beach embankment near the Someshwara temple. KTIL built a concrete wall of about 300 metres to protect the location from erosion.

Host of facilities

The beach development project included building infrastructure and a host of facilities, including retaining walls, storm water drains, pathways, galleries, renovation of rest rooms and the temple kalyani (pond), lighting, parking facilities, and seating arrangements.

Touted to be one of the safest beaches along the Karnataka coast, the beach in Someshwara had been a hidden treasure for many years until the Udupi district administration took up improvement projects. Stretching for a length of about 1 km between the mouth of Sumanavathi and the Ottinene Hillock, the beach does not witness severe wave action, thereby being relatively safe for tourists.
