Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M. Appavu released water from Kodumudiyar dam near Valliyoor in the district on Monday for ‘pisanam’ season paddy cultivation to be taken-up on 5,780 acres of land in Radhapuram and Nanguneri taluks.
After releasing water from the dam in the presence of District Collector R. Sukumar, Mr. Appavu said 100 cusecs of water would be released from Kodumudiyar dam till March 31, 2026 to enable the farmers to take-up ‘pisanam’ season paddy cultivation. The water being released from Kodumudiyar dam would reach the crop to be cultivated on 936 acres via Valliyooran, Padalaiyar, Aathu and Vadamalaiyan Channels.
Moreover, paddy cultivation would be taken-up on another 4,844 acres through the Kodumudiyar dam water to stored in the tanks. In all, paddy would be raised during this ‘pisanam’ season on 5,780 acres, he said.
“Since the northeast monsoon is yet to intensify to substantially jack-up storage level in the dams, the farmers should use the water judiciously,” the Speaker appealed.
He also said the District Collector had made extensive arrangements for ensuring uninterrupted supply of fertilizers and disbursal of interest-free crop loans to the farmers going in for ‘pisanam’ paddy cultivation. If the agriculturists encountered any hurdles in getting crop loans or buying fertlizers, they should alert the Collector who would take steps for addressing these issues.
