The Tamil Nadu government has sought detailed project reports from all municipal corporations for three categories of road improvement works as per the 2026-27 budget announcement.
The projects include safe access to schools, improvements to traffic islands, and people-friendly streets. A scheme proposes ₹110 crore for these works in Chennai and other municipal corporations, according to a communication dated October 7, which was accessed by The Hindu.
The communication from R. Sukumar, Municipal Administration Joint Director, said the projects would be implemented at an estimated cost of ₹275 crore, as per the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department’s 2026-27 budget announcements.
Under the proposal, ₹10 crore has been earmarked for developing 45 km of people-friendly modern streets in Chennai city, while ₹35 crore will be spent on improving streets for a distance of 1 km to provide safe access to schools. A total of ₹65 crore has been allocated for improving 105 traffic islands.
In other municipal corporations, ₹165 crore has been earmarked for similar works, including people-friendly streets, safe access to schools, and traffic island improvements.
Municipal corporations have been asked to prepare detailed project reports for the three categories of works and submit them to the department for administrative approval by November 15, 2026.
The projects are intended to improve road usability and safety, particularly for schoolchildren and other road users, while upgrading streets and traffic islands.
