T.N. Assembly election 2026: Collectors hold meeting in central districts

Collectors of Tiruchi, Ariyalur, Karur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and other districts on Sunday held meetings with election officials to enforce the Model Code of Conduct following the announcement of the Assembly election schedule.

In Tiruchi, a control room has been opened to receive complaints on violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), according to Collector V. Saravanan, who is also the District Election Officer.

He told The Hindu that flying squads and static surveillance teams had taken position in their respective areas. Video surveillance teams had been formed to monitor the enforcement of the Model Code in the district. Teams would be on duty round-the clock and keep a vigil against distribution of cash or gifts. The teams would be deployed in three shifts round-the-clock.

Immediately after the poll dates were announced, the officials began the task of removing political posters, banners, portraits of political leaders, and stickers. It was said that they would be removed from government offices within a day. Similarly, the political graffiti on government properties, highways, bridges, and institutions have been removed.

There are nine Assembly constituencies such as Tiruchi East, Tiruchi West, Srirangam, Mannachanallur, Thuraiyur (reserved), Tiruverumbur, Manapparai, Musiri, and Lalgudi in Tiruchi district. As per the final electoral rolls released in February, the district has 21,26,303 voters with 10,94,642 women, 10,31,354 men, and 307 others.

The Srirangam Assembly constituency continues to remain the largest in the district in terms of voter strength with 2,83,862 electors and Thuraiyur is the smallest with 2,09,011 voters. Women outnumber men in all nine Assembly constituencies in the district.

The public grievance day meeting and other other forms of grievance meetings have been suspended in Tiruchi district in view of the announcement of general elections to the State Assembly. A petition box would be kept at the Collector’s office and the people could drop their petitions in it.
