The Thuraiymangalam Lake in Perambalur is being renovated with private participation.
The tank situated in Perambalur Municipal limits and maintained by the Water Resources Department is one of the major water sources in the locality.
It is one of the major tanks in the district under the Maruthaiyar river basin and irrigates about 273.80 acres. Spread over 48.50 hectares, the tank gets inflows through inlet channels from the Ladapuram big and small tanks, Kurumbalur, Senjeri, Aranarai, and Perambalur west and east tanks, besides the anicut near Maruthaiyar Vilamuthur and other catchment areas. The tank has a capacity to hold 17.22 million cubic feet of water. The tank bund runs for a length of 1,064 metres and strengthening the banks of the water body also forms part of the renovation exercise.
On Friday, District Collector Sharanya Ari inaugurated the initiative at the Thuraimangalam Lake taken up with the support of the Sky Blue Group and will be executed through Mega Foundation, which had taken up renovation of various water bodies across the state.
Apart from cleaning and desilting the lake, its bunds would be strengthened under the initative, Ms. Ari said in a press release.
Important lakes across the district are being surveyed and steps would be taken to clean and desilt them with the help of voluntary organisations, she added.
