Various trade union organisations and Left parties joined hands to hold the nationwide general strike against Labour Codes — introduced by the Union government — on Thursday, February 12, in Mangaluru.

Several trade unions, farmers’ organisations and Left parties staged a ‘rasta roko’ and held meetings as part of a nationwide general strike in Mangaluru and Udupi on Thursday, February 12, to protest the four Labour Codes introduced by the Union government after repealing 29 existing labour legislations.
Workers and employees from various sections of society joined hands and blocked the road near the Clock Tower in Mangaluru. They later held a protest meeting and shouted slogans against the Union government.
Addressing the gathering, the Centre of Indian Trade Union Dakshina Kannada District general secretary Sunil Kumar Bajal said, “The Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre, which promised to bring ‘achche din’, has not only looted the country’s wealth in the last 12 years but has also formulated all its policies in favour of corporates. It has made the lives of the common people miserable. The Union government, which has abolished labour laws, has implemented codes in favour of the country’s monopoly capitalists.”
Dakshina Kannada District Bank Employees’ Association general secretary Vincent D’Souza said, “The Union government, which has made so many banks nameless through mergers to eliminate nationalised banks that had contributed immensely to the country’s economy, has today subjected the insurance sector to 100% foreign direct investment. In this way, it has upended the country’s economy.”
Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) district leader Yogish Jappinamogaru, Karnataka Bank Employees’ Association national general secretary K.G. Phanindra, All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) district general secretary Sitaram Berinja, bank employee leader B.M. Madhav, Democratic Youth Federation of India district president B.K. Imtiaz, AITUC district leader H.V. Rao and others also spoke on the occasion.

In Udupi, organisations held a protest meeting followed by a rasta roko at Jodukatte. CITU state secretary Suresh Kallagar, Sahabalve convener Phaniraj, Dalita Sangharsha Samiti leader Sundar Master and others spoke on the occasion.
The leaders told former minister and Congress leader Vinay Kumar Sorake, who visited the spot, to urge the State government not to implement the four Labour Codes from April 10.
