District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad released pamphlets and posters on road safety at a programme organised to mark the launch National Road Safety Month (January) at the Collectorate on Thursday.
The Collector called upon the officials to make Visakhapatnam district accident-free by driving home the road safety message among the road users, including motorists and pedestrians.
He asked the engineering officials to ensure proper markings and signboards on the roads. Technology should be used to provide safety training to road users, he said, adding that emphasis should be laid on training two-wheeler riders, pedestrians and school children.
At a separate programme, Police Commissioner Shankhabrata Bagchi directed the traffic police and the Transport Department officials to organise awareness sessions during the month-long programme.
The driving licence of motorists violating the rules should be suspended for three months. Drunken driving should be dealt with sternly, he said.
Meanwhile, District Public Transportation Officer B. Appala Naidu held a meeting with APSRTC officials and discussed the activities to be taken up during the month-long drive.
He asked the Depot Managers to adopt technology and provide training in safe driving to drivers. He called for periodic medical check-ups of every driver and presentation of awards to the drivers with ‘accident-free’ records.
Deputy Chief Traffic Manager K. Padmavathi, Deputy Mechanical Engineer A. Gangadhara Rao, Depot Managers and other officials participated in the meeting.
