Backward Classes Welfare Minister V. Sampath Kumar serves breakfast to students at the launch of the expanded Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme at Rathinapuri Government Higher Secondary School in Coimbatore city on Tuesday.

The Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme was extended to students of Classes VI to VIII in 501 government and government-aided schools in Coimbatore district on Tuesday.
The expansion will benefit 56,550 students in the district, said Backward Classes Welfare Minister V. Sampath Kumar, who participated in the launch event at Rathinapuri Government Higher Secondary School here and had breakfast with the students.
The scheme was already being implemented for students of Classes I to V in 1,107 schools, benefiting 71,028 students. With the expansion, the scheme will now cover 1,608 schools and 1,27,578 students in Classes I to VIII across the district.
Mr. Sampath Kumar said the scheme would support students’ nutrition, school attendance and learning, particularly those from economically disadvantaged families.
District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar, Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja, Chief Educational Officer Krishnapriya and other officials participated in the programme. Mr. Sampath Kumar also planted saplings on the school premises.
At Malumachampatti Government Higher Secondary School in Madukkarai panchayat union, Prohibition and Excise Minister K. Vignesh participated in the programme and had breakfast with the students.
Separately, Mayor K. Ranganayaki inaugurated the expanded scheme at Ramakrishnapuram Corporation Middle School in Ganapathy. The school already has 210 students of Classes I to V benefiting from the scheme, while the expansion will cover 135 students of Classes VI to VIII. The Mayor served breakfast to the students and had the meal with them.
