A tribal residential school at Chadivayal in the Boluvampatti forest range was damaged in the attack by a wild elephant in the early hours of Monday.
Forest Department officials said that no students were staying in the residential school, which is situated near Chadivayal tribal settlement within the forest, at time of the incident.
They that a wild elephant approached the residential school around 2 a.m. and damaged the windows of a room, after being lured by the scent of raw rice kept inside. The elephant scattered furniture and other objects in the room with its trunk, reportedly while attempting to reach the rice bags.
Official said that a similar incident had been reported in the school before when rice was stored in one of the rooms. Since the students studying in the residential school are from nearby tribal settlements like Chadivayal, none of them were staying in the facility on Sunday night, they added.
The school authorities have reported the damages to the Tribal Welfare Department.
