The Tripura Bar Association, the apex body of lawyers in the State, on Monday (January 19, 2026) set a deadline for the removal of the president of the West Tripura District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Gautam Sarkar, who has been accused of misbehaving with lawyers in an inebriated condition.
Mr. Sarkar is a retired district and sessions judge.
Demanding that Mr. Sarkar be sacked in three days, the lawyers said they would boycott the consumer court till action is taken. The leaders of the bar said they will take up the demands with the Minister of Food and Consumer Affairs.
“The bar is unanimous in adopting a resolution for the removal of Gautam Sarkar within three days. We have also decided to boycott the consumer court till the government appoints a new president,” senior advocate Pijush Biswas announced after the meeting.
He said they will try to meet the concerned Minister this evening to seek his intervention.
Mr. Biswas and other lawyers alleged that Mr. Sarkar had been embroiled in serious controversies during his tenure in the judiciary. He was often found to be in an intoxicated condition and committed acts contrary to his stature, they alleged.
