TVK protests Udhayanidhi’s remarks, DMK condemns his arrest in Erode

Condemning the allegedly derogatory remarks made by Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin, cadre of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) staged a demonstration near Panneerselvam Park here on Tuesday.

The protesters alleged that Mr. Udhayanidhi’s speech, delivered during a recent protest in Thanjavur, contained objectionable remarks against Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and offensive references to women. They said such comments were unbecoming of a senior political leader and demanded that he tender an unconditional public apology. Raising slogans against the DMK leader, the cadre maintained that political discourse should remain respectful and accused him of lowering the standards of public debate.

Meanwhile, following reports of Mr. Udhayanidhi’s arrest, DMK cadre assembled near Kalaimadu Silai and staged a counter-protest condemning the police action.

The protesters alleged that the TVK government had registered a false case against the Leader of the Opposition to prevent him from attending the State Budget session, scheduled to commence on Wednesday. They claimed the government was attempting to divert public attention from governance issues and its inability to implement development projects. The demonstration was led by former Minister S. Muthusamy.
