The Forest Department has arrested two persons and remanded them in judicial custody on Tuesday for poaching a sambar deer using avuttukai (country-made explosive) in Kottakarai area near Therkumalai Reserve Forest.
According to forest officials, during a patrol led by Boothapandi Forest Range Officer Anbalagan late on Monday, the personnel found that a sambar deer had been poached using a country-made explosive. The forest personnel recovered the head, intestines and other parts of the deer from near a bush.
Following which, a case was registered under the Indian Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and a search was launched to identify the individuals involved in the offence. Based on the evidence gathered by the forest personnel, including CCTV surveillance footage and others, two persons, M. Alwin Raj, 30 and S. Ramesh, 42 both residents of Kattupudhur, were arrested.
They were produced before the Special Court for Forest Cases in Nagercoil and remanded in judicial custody.
Kanniyakumari District Forest Officer A. Anbu told The Hindu that efforts had been intensified to identify those who had purchased the venison and supplied the chemicals to make country-made explosives.
